Apprenticeship Program Receives Award

Dr. Stephen Athans, Dean of Vocational and Technical Programs at Central Carolina Community College, recently accepted the 2014 Governor's Award for Excellence in Workforce Development as an "Outstanding Innovative Partnership" on behalf of the Caterpillar Registered Youth Apprenticeship Program.

The program is a partnership that includes the college, Lee County Schools, Caterpillar's Sanford plant and the N.C. Dept. of Commerce (NCWorks). The Caterpillar Youth Apprentice Program in welding was developed by, and is a partnership among, Caterpillar, CCCC, Lee County Schools, and the N.C. Department of Labor. The goal of the program is to train high school students through their junior and senior years for critical, high-demand, well-paying careers in welding, as well as to help provide the skilled workforce Caterpillar and other modern industries need. The students continue their high school studies during their junior and senior years while taking welding and manufacturing-related classes. They train at CCCC's Lee County Campus or its Industry Training Center at the Lee County Innovation Center three days a week and work/train at Caterpillar two days per week.

The health fair will be held on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. There will be free health screenings, local resources, health education, a flu shot clinic, the bloodmobile, door prizes, and much more!

Faculty Advancement Funds

Hello Faculty Members,

The vision for Central Carolina Community College is to be a nationally recognized, world-class leader which provides opportunities that contribute to economic progress and cultural enrichment for students and communities we serve.

To empower faculty to take an active role in achieving this ideal, The Center for Teaching and Learning and Human Resources will now be offering financial assistance to full-time faculty members to attend nationally/regionally-recognized professional development workshops, conferences, and/or seminars.

Proposals are now being accepted through November 25 and will be reviewed by the Faculty Advancement Funds Committee. The maximum amount awarded per individual per trip will be $1,250. Please see the Faculty Advancement Fund document for more information.

Fall PD Sessions - Sign Up Today!

All sessions will be held on the Lee Campus in the Smart conference room/Fitness building #810. Sessions began September 11 and will end December 4. We will also continue to live stream, record, and connect to the Smart rooms on the Pittsboro and Harnett campuses.

An e-ticket is not required for check-in and there is no charge for any of the sessions. We hope to see you there!

New College Success Team Member

College Success and Student Transitions is happy to announce the newest addition to our team, Student Success Advocate Mrs. A. Nichole Merritt McFarland.

Nichole is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She earned her undergraduate degree at ECU and completed her MA in Marriage and Family Therapy at Appalachian State University.

In her role as the Student Success Advocate, Nichole will promote student success by assisting Health Sciences students with academic, personal, mental, or social issues that may interfere with student success. She will work with Health Sciences students to explore issues and share concerns about college life to improve communication and interpersonal skills, manage stress effectively, and make positive changes in life that lead to increased retention.

Congratulations to Emily Shepard, winner of the Cengage Computing's Instructor Authoring Competition for SAM projects. Emily's database project will be delivered to students across the nation online in SAM and in print as an appendix in three series - Shelly Cashman, New Perspectives and Illustrated - starting in 2015.

Mike Beck, Dean of Student Learning

Mike is the new Dean of Student Learning and earned his undergraduate degree and MA in History at Fayetteville State University and Ed. S. in Educational Leadership at Liberty University.

Mike uses a comprehensive and data-informed approach to providing support for the student learning process, beginning with the first communication with potential students (access) until students meet their respective goals (success).

Mike will work with various departments, including College Success and Student Transitions, Student Outreach & Recruitment, Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Assistance, Writing & Reading Center, and Evening College to help maximize student success

Meghan Reece Brown, Associate Director, Grants and Strategic Initiatives

Meghan is a licensed attorney and joins the college after practicing as a criminal defense and family law attorney. She earned her undergraduate degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and completed her Juris Doctorate at Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law.

In her role as the Associate Director of Grant and Strategic Initiatives, Meghan will promote student success through collaboration with faculty and staff to secure additional grant funding, which will provide new programs and program enhancements for the college. Additionally, Meghan will work with faculty and staff to manage active grant programs to ensure successful completion and maximum effectiveness of such programs.

Stormy Mascitelli, Coordinator of Institutional Research

Stormy earned her undergraduate degree at Western New England University and her MA in Education at The University of Georgia.

Stormy has previously worked as an academic advisor and as an assistant registrar. Stormy provides leadership in institutional research processes that support continuous improvement and data-informed decision-making in all areas of the college.

Jill Simpson is an assistant in the Institutional Effectiveness Department, continuing to work closely with the Human Resource department, on a part time basis. She provides support to the Coordinator of Institutional Research, Associate VP of Student Learning and Strategic Planning, and the Director of Human Resources. Jill earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology with a minor in Business at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA.

In her role as an IE Accreditation Assistant, Jill works with various departments, faculty members and staff collecting and reporting necessary data to meet guideline requirements established by the college's regional accrediting body. In collaboration with her colleagues, Jill participates in projects, engages in thoughtful discussion, and makes recommendations to college leaders based on her findings in various areas such as faculty credentials.

Veteran College Fair and Veterans Day Memorial

Veterans Upward Bound in collaboration with Veterans Affairs will be hosting a Veteran College Fair and Veterans Day Memorial on Friday, November 14, at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center in Sanford, NC. Bojangles of Pittsboro, a co-sponsor of the event, will provide lunch for participants.

This event will honor veterans for their dedication and service as well as provide information from various public and private institutions. Veterans will be honored from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. with a special memorial service.

The College Fair will be conducted from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. where veterans can gather information on NC colleges and universities. Current participants in the college fair include:

2014-2015 Center for Teaching and Learning Grants

Central Carolina Community College's Center for Teaching and Learning and CCCC Foundation invite your proposals for the 2014-2015 Center for Teaching & Learning Grants. Grant funds are available to faculty members who have identified instructional needs and can demonstrate a commitment to student learning outcomes through the grant proposal.

Central Carolina Community College Learning Grants:

• Support innovative projects that are designed to enhance student learning, promote student success, and further innovation in teaching and learning.
• Support projects on a one-time, one-year basis.
• Are flexible and intended to support ideas and projects at the appropriate stage of development to provide you with a tailored educational opportunity.

Grant applications may be submitted by individuals or groups who are full-time or part-time faculty members of Central Carolina Community College. A total of $700 in grant funds is available.

Grants will be awarded using a competitive selection process. Grant applications are due on October 31, 2014 by 3:30 p.m. and all activities must be completed by May 29, 2015. Completed activities/projects must be evaluated based on how student learning has improved. The Grant Application, Guidelines, and Project/Activity Evaluation form are attached.

Award winners will also be asked to provide a Faculty Roundtable session to share experiences with other CCCC staff and faculty. All appropriate electronic resources created during the project will be distributed through the Center for Teaching and Learning website.

News From The Library

Major Changes in Library Databases Coming Soon

The Library's electronic resources will undergo major changes between now and January 2015. Many NC LIVE databases are being dropped and replaced with other new resources. These changes will have a significant impact on class assignments that require library research and resources. Therefore, faculty may need to adjust some of their assignments and syllabi for next semester. This detailed announcement (http://lgdata.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/docs/3174/1247978/2015DatabaseChangesAnnouncementMemo.pdf) outlines the changes in NC LIVE database offerings, changes in CCCC databases, and new online resources that will be offered beginning January 1, 2015. New eBook Resources

Library users now have access to three new eBook collections. The CCCC Library recently acquired the following collections:

• Axis 360 eBooks - This new collection of popular fiction and non-fiction titles is available for download in eBook and eAudio Book formats. Using the Blio app, these eBooks are also ADA compliant.
• Community College eBook Collection (via EBSCOhost eBooks) - Over 50,000 eBooks specific to community college programs of study are now available to search and download. Find these in the EBSCOhost eBook collections via NC LIVE.

NC LIVE recently added a new eBook collection:

• Home Grown eBooks Collection (via NC LIVE) - These eBooks are by North Carolina publishers and include fiction and non-fiction titles. There is no limit to the number of people who can download the same title at the same time, so every title is always available. These eBooks are now available for download.

Computers Now in Library Study Rooms

All Library study rooms at the Lee and Harnett campus libraries now have touch screen computers, dry erase white boards, and webcams for students to work on group assignments. These technologies were purchased with LSTA Grant funds to provide technology enhanced study rooms that facilitate student learning, information literacy, and computer literacy. Be sure to let your students know that these study rooms are available, and that they can reserve a study room online through our Get a Room service.

Fifth Annual Haunted Library

Our fifth annual Haunted Library will be held October 27 - 31 in the Lee Library. This year's display will include Halloween contributions by our Electronics Engineering students. Stop by for a trick or treat!

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?

A.   Since Sept. 22, 2014.

Q.   What brought you to CCCC?

A.   I have a great appreciation of the college, its mission and its people. When I learned that Katherine McDonald was retiring, I thought this position would provide an exciting new challenge.

Q.   Describe what you do for the College.

A.   I work in the Marketing Department, where I am the writer for various projects, including news releases.

Q.   Where were you born?

A.   Moore County, NC.

Q.   Where did you grow up?

A.   I lived in Carthage, NC, until age 7, when we moved to the Deep River area of Lee County. After that, I lived in Chapel Hill, NC, Aiken, SC., and Buies Creek, NC, before moving back to Lee County in 1979.

Q.   Educational credentials?

A.    Graduate of Deep River High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (bachelor degree in journalism, with a double major in radio, television and motion pictures.

Q.   Where do you live now?

A.   Sanford.

Q.   Marital status?

A.   My wife, Bunnie, and I have been married since June 25, 1977.

Q.   Do you have children/grandchildren?

A.    My son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Jenni Hight, live in Morrisville. My daughter, Holly Hight, lives in Sanford.

Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?

A.    Spending time with family and enjoying life.

Bereavements

Sabrina DiLanzo's father passed away on Friday, October 14. Sabrina is back from Florida after being with her family. If you know Sabrina and feel so inclined, I am sure she would appreciate hearing from you.

The brother of Polly Bouldin passed away on October 4. William Mac "Bill" Holder, age 72, of Sanford, passed away at Emerald Health and Rehab Center in Lillington. The funeral was held on October 6 at the Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel.

Retiree Joan Bowling passed away on Sunday, September 28. Funeral was held on Tuesday, September 30 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Sanford. Joan is survived by her husband Edward, daughters Laura Gay and Lisa Wishart, six grandchildren and two sisters. Cards can be sent to the family home at: 418 Vernon Street, Broadway, NC 27505.
