Active Shooter Drill
Shots were fired in the Science Building at Central Carolina Community College's Lee County Campus. Law enforcement, fire and rescue workers were immediately dispatched to the scene. Within 25 minutes, the shooter was captured, but not before killing two people and wounding seven others.
It wasn't a real incident, but it could have been. By conducting its first Active Shooter Drill on July 18, Central Carolina Community College is determined to be prepared to deal with such scenarios.
Approximately 110 people participated in the event, including CCCC staff and faculty; police personnel from the Sanford, Siler City, and Pittsboro police departments; the Lee County Sheriff's Department; the North Carolina State Highway Patrol; the Sanford Fire Department; Central Carolina Hospital Advanced Life Support-EMS; Benhaven Emergency Services; and the University of North Carolina Air Care helicopter.
CCCC Library Assistant Peggy Cotton said that as soon as the drill got underway, it became eerily real to her.
"I got the message immediately that we were under attack," she said. "I locked the doors, notified the other staff members and got in the restroom. It was frightening to think that this really could happen. When Monday comes, I'm going to talk to the library director and other staff members to make sure that we have a plan of action, someone assigned to lock the door, say that we're under attack, and so on."
CCCC President Bud Marchant asserted that the exercise was not only vital to campus security, but beneficial to everyone involved.
"It allows local law enforcement and emergency services personnel to become familiar with the campus, while getting excellent training," he said. And it ensures that the college has procedures in place in the case of such an event."
CCCC Security Director Frank Bedoe said the exercise is only the first in a series the college is planning.
"I'm sending out a questionnaire to gain feedback from every person and all agencies who participated," he said. "Our Emergency Planning Committee will meet, evaluate the responses and use them to develop future exercises."

Faculty Named Certified Nurse Educator
The Louise L. Tuller School of Nursing Associate Degree Program is pleased to announce that Barbara Campbell has earned the designation Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after meeting strict eligibility criteria and successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing.

25th Annual CCCC Foundation Lee County Golf Classic
Please mark your calendars! The Foundation is planning our 25th Annual CCCC Foundation Lee County Golf Classic. The classic will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at the Sanford Golf Course.
Chatham Cottage Auction
The cozy, energy-efficient Chatham Cottage, crafted by Central Carolina Community College Sustainability Technologies students, will be auctioned off at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the college's Chatham County Campus, 764 West St., Pittsboro, NC.
The one bedroom, one bath, 529-square-foot cottage features a vaulted living room ceiling, energy efficient vinyl windows, and reclaimed oak flooring. It can serve as a great transition home for people wanting simplicity and sustainability, guesthouse, mother-in-law suite, or other uses. The house can be viewed 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. News From the Library
New Library Assistant
The library welcomes Kimberly Steiner as our new Part-Time Evening Library Assistant at the Sanford main campus. Kimberly has a Bachelor of Art in Art Conservation with a concentration in collections care from the University of Delaware. She has experience working in archives, including cataloging, conservation, and digitization, and experience in collections management, exhibits, and research for museums and historical societies.
In her new position at CCCC, she will manage our law and periodicals collections, assist with our college archives project, and work at the information desk in the evenings. Her hours beginning in the fall semester will be 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Kimberly is excited to be at CCCC and to enter the library field. She recently moved to Pittsboro from Delaware with her husband, son, and four dogs, and she enjoys exploring the area.

In FY 2013-2014, we provided the following for our students, faculty, and staff.
- Checked out 11,982 items (We ranked 9th in number of check-outs for NC community colleges!)
- Borrowed 904 items through interlibrary loan
- Loaned 509 items through interlibrary loan
- Taught 1,562 students in 74 library instruction classes
- Booked 1,495 study room reservations for a total of 1,722 hours

Mark Hall
Provost, Chatham County Campus
- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. Since January 2005.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. Initially, I became interested in teaching at a community college because of the great things a few CCCC instructors told me about working at our college. I first came to CCCC as an ACA 090 adjunct instructor. At the time, I was also teaching at Middle Creek High School and at Wake Technical Community College. Carl Bryan, then department chair for Humanities, also asked me to teach some summer English courses. During that summer, I was very fortunate to be granted an interview for and offered a full-time instructor position at the Lillington campus. I started full-time in the fall 2005.
- Q. Describe what you do for the College.
- A. For the first nine years I taught English and Humanities courses. In 2009, I became the Lead Instructor for Humanities. In that capacity I continued to teach but also supervised our department's adjunct instructors and coordinated department schedules. For the past five years, I've been the co-advisor, with Mike Neal, for the college's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. I'm also in the fourth year directing the C-STEP at CCCC. In my position as Provost for Chatham County, I oversee college operations, strategic planning, policy development, and community involvement within the county.
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. Charlotte, NC.
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. Mostly in Wilmington, NC, but I finished high school in Cary, NC.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. I earned a Bachelor of Art degree in Psychology, with a focus on behavioral neuroscience from Appalachian State University. I also earned a Master's degree in Literature, from NC State University. I am currently working towards a doctoral degree in Educational Research and Policy Analysis, with a specialization in Higher Education Administration.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. I have lived in Sanford for the last ten years but, hopefully, will be moving to Chatham County within the next year.
- Q. Marital status?
- A. I have been happily married for 11 years.
- Q. Do you have children/grandchildren?
- A. I have three children, two daughters, 9 and 7, and one son, 4.
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. While I like to whitewater kayak, run, bike, play guitar and bass, and read, I mostly stay active keeping up with my children.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. I am privileged to work with the faculty and staff of CCCC for almost a decade, and I look forward to working with them for years to come.

Birth Announcement
Drew Goodson, wife Erin, and daughter Elizabeth have good news! Mia Catherine Goodson was born at 8:25 a.m. on July 13, 2014. She weighed 7 lbs., 5 ounces. Mom, baby, and big sister are doing great!
News From The CCCC Family
Retirement
Dr. Karen Allen was hired in 1988 - and she was instrumental in bringing about those changes. Twenty-six years later, she has bid farewell to the college, retiring as of June 30. The college hired Allen in 1988 as its continuing education coordinator in Chatham County. In 1996, the Chatham resident became the college's provost for the county with the responsibility to lead and grow the college as it served Chatham's growing population and need for vocational, continuing, and university transfer education. Allen said she has no specific plans for her retirement, but that she will continue to be actively involved in leadership endeavors with Chatham County. She has already been appointed by the Chatham County Board of Commissioners to serve on the Health Board and is looking forward to that.
