WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
A Team Success!
Thanks to Chef Hamm and his students, Marketing, Security, Patrick Kelly, The Cougar Print Shop, Social Committee members, Maintenance, and the Welcome Center staff at the Lee County Campus for putting on such a wonderful reception on March 4 to honor our three former presidents who have been inducted into The Order of the Long Leaf Pine: Dr. J.F. "Jeff" Hockaday, Dr. Marvin R. Joyner, and Dr. Matthew S. Garrett.
The ceremony was great and the last minute details were handled flawlessly. Thanks to all who assisted with the behind-the-scenes work to make the reception such a success! Former employees, including some who were with the college almost at its beginning, as well as current employees, community members, elected officials, and President Scott Ralls, of the North Carolina Community College System, gathered to recognize the tremendous contributions of these presidents in making the college what it is. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is a prestigious award given by the governor of North Carolina. The Order is presented to citizens of the state who have given outstanding service and contributed toward creating a better North Carolina, according to the Order's website, www.longleafpinesociety.org. Since its inception in 1963, only about 15,000 have been awarded.
Taking part in the presentation of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine to three former CCCC presidents were (from left) CCCC President Bud Marchant; Jon Hockaday, who received the award on behalf of his father, Past President Jeff Hockaday; Past President Marvin Joyner; Past President Matthew Garrett; North Carolina Community College System President Scott Ralls; and former N.C. Sen. Bob Atwater, who nominated the past presidents for the honor.
Former President Matthew S. Garrett greets old friends at the reception, including Velner Jones, long-time Lee County resident, former CCCC trustee, former Foundation director and CCCC Foundation donor.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
3M Innovation Center Grant Benefits Workforce Training
The 3M Corporation, through its 3Mgives Community Giving Grant program, has awarded Central Carolina Community College's Industry Services Office a $5,000 grant. The grant will be used to purchase technology or equipment for the college's Industry Training Center located at the Innovation Center in the Lee County Industrial Park. The Industry Training Center provides workforce training for area companies. It also provides part of the training for the Caterpillar Youth Apprenticeship Program in welding, which enrolls students from Lee and Southern Lee high schools. The Foundation receives donations on behalf of the college and uses them to promote its educational mission.

Soup & Sandwich for Life!
Soup & Sandwich for Life - Thursday, April 3
Our spring Soup & Sandwich for Life event is Thursday, April 3, from 11 am until 2 pm. Tickets are still available for $6 each or $5 with the donation of two canned goods. Each ticket provides you with a soup, half sandwich, dessert, and bottled water. We are providing delivery to any Lee satellite campus that purchases four or more tickets! Just indicate your campus location when you purchase a ticket.
Join the CCCC Relay for Life Team!

Raffle for a Pair of Adirondack Chairs
The CCCC Relay for Life team is raffling off a pair of Adirondack chairs again this year! Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing will occur on May 9 at the Relay for Life event. You do not have to be present to win. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.
#IHEARTCC - Join The Movement
The Student Outreach and Recruitment team invite you to Join the Movement and take part in our #IHEARTCC hashtag campaign!
If you have a Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook account we are asking you to hashtag #IHEARTCC on EVERYTHING. So spread the word about the great things you're currently doing at CCCC. Ask your students to use the hashtag with their respective social media accounts to voice their opinion on why CCCC is the place to be!! This campaign is all about continuing the positive momentum we have at the college, and getting our prospective students excited about enrolling for the upcoming fall semester this summer! Thank you for your continued support!
Spring Professional Development Day
Let's continue the momentum from our Professional Development Day into the new year by signing up for sessions from our Spring Professional Development calendar.
All sessions will be held on the Lee Campus in the smart conference room/Fitness building #810 starting January 31, and ending May 2. We will also continue our pilot of live streaming and connecting to the smart rooms on the Pittsboro and Harnett campuses.

Once a session is complete, the recorded presentation will be uploaded to our HR/PD Blackboard site under the Professional Development tab in the left-hand column. Scroll to the middle of the page and click the 2014 Spring PD Training Series to find all recorded sessions.
IA Division Retreat
The Institutional Advancement Division held a retreat February 27 at the Ruby McSwain Center. It was a full day of learning, teambuilding, and setting targets for each department. Phillip Price, Vice President for Administrative Services, did a presentation on CCCC's new budget process.

CCCC Hosting NC VetsCorps Member with the AmeriCorps Program

How Can NC VetsCorps Help?
NC VetsCorps is an AmeriCorps program managed by MDC, a nonprofit organization based in Durham. The mission of NC VetsCorps is to improve military outreach and ease the transition from military to civilian life. During the service year, NC VetsCorps members aim to enhance the success of outreach efforts to veterans, current military members and their families by providing a broad range of assistive and referral services such as:
- Assistance with applying for federal benefits through the Benefit Bank of North Carolina or ePASS
- Connection to the appropriate education or training programs
- Filing federal and state income taxes
- Facilitating legal services such as discharge upgrades or helping veterans navigate the services
- Referrals to community-based and federal social service agencies, education and training centers, or job placement services, and more.

Interested in Teaching ACA?
CCCC faculty and staff are invited to consider teaching one of our new first-year success courses, ACA 122 or ACA 115.
On Friday, May 16, the College Success Center will host an engaging all-day training session where you will:
- Learn and practice active teaching strategies
- Discover best practices for using our updated Bb course shells for ACA 122 and ACA 115
- Engage with student-centered colleagues from across the three campuses in a reflective, interactive, and fun day!
Complete this online form to express interest in teaching ACA during the 2014-15 academic year! After you complete the interest form, you will receive more details about the May 16 training session. Employment Opportunities with UBMS Summer Academy
The Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program is currently hiring for summer positions! Please encourage your students or others in the community to apply!
UBMS is a federally funded pre-college program designed to strengthen the math and science skills of 60 participating Harnett County high school students from low-income families or families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science and, ultimately, careers in the math and science professions.

- Residence Hall Night Monitor
- Academic Instructors (4 - Math, English, Science, Foreign Language)

News From Lee County Library
One Password Is Here
You asked, we answered! On our last two library surveys, an overwhelming majority of students and faculty indicated that they wanted one password for accessing our online resources off campus. The library recently purchased a software product which allowed us to set up a single login for all databases instead of having separate passwords for each. You can now access the library's online resources and Integrated Search using just one password. This new service is called OnePass. When you try to access our databases, you will be prompted for the new login and password. To obtain the new OnePass login information, stop by the library to see us or give us a call at 919-718-7244.
National Library Week
The Library will celebrate National Library Week on April 14 - 17. Our activities will include:
- Library Trivia Challenge with candy prizes and a grand prize at the end of the week
- Library Staff Picks Display - see what the library staff like to read or watch, and check these items out
- Jelly Bean Jar Count - guess how many jelly beans are in the jar, and you win the whole jar
- Name the Library Newsletter Contest - submit your ideas/suggestions to name our library newsletter. The winning suggestion will receive a prize. Enter your ideas in the box/basket at the circulation desk or on our Facebook page.
- Library Survey - watch your email for announcements regarding our spring library survey, which will overlap with National Library Week. We value your input!
Go Green at the Library
The Library will also celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by having an activity on our Facebook page. Post a picture on our Facebook page of you doing something green/sustainable and get entered into a drawing for a prize. The prize will go to the best or most creative green activity. We will also have a bulletin board display, Go Green at the Library, for the whole month of April.

Friends of the Chatham Community Library Spring Book Sale! Thursday, Friday and Saturday April 3, 4, and 5, at Chatham Community Library! We have hundreds of books at reasonable prices, including children's books, best sellers, DVDs, audiobooks, and collectible books.

News From the Sustainability Committee
Please join the Sustainable Technologies Department and Students for Sustainability, for our Earth Day event on Tuesday, April 22, from 4 pm until 6 pm. There will be an open house of the Chatham Cottage, (a house the students will auction), and a student fundraiser for Slow Food's/1,000 African Gardens.
Check out the Slow Food's website to see what they are doing. There will be an auction and Slow Food is currently asking for donations, whether monetary or goods and services, that can be auctioned off to community members on Earth Day during our campus event! - Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. I have worked at CCCC for three years.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. CCCC brought me back home! After a year of working at a private college in Alabama, the opportunity in the CCCC Foundation became available and it was the perfect place to further my career in higher education.
- Q. Describe what you do for the College.
- A. I am the Director for Foundation and Development. I oversee our fundraising program for CCCC. I manage over 100+ endowments, I oversee our Annual Fund Drive, our Foundation Scholarship Program, the Grants Department, and also any fundraising events we have in our three-county service area. I love my job!

- A. Pinehurst

- A. I have a B.A. in Communication with a minor in Journalism from Wake Forest University and an M.B.A. with a concentration in Marketing from Pfeiffer University.

- A. I have a huge passion for my Demon Deacons and I also love watching NASCAR. I actively compete in triathlons and other various running and swimming events in NC. I also love spending time with my family out on the golf course!
