CCCC Gets Clean SACS Interim Accreditation Report
The regional accrediting agency for colleges and universities has given Central Carolina Community College a "thumbs-up" following an in-depth review of the quality of its programs and procedures. CCCC's Fifth Year Interim (Reaffirmation) Report received no referrals or follow-ups from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Only 18 percent of SACS member institutions have received that high approval in recent years.
SACS is the regional accrediting body for degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states. Its mission, through its Commission on Colleges, is to assure the educational quality and improve the effectiveness of its member institutions, according to its website, www.sacs.org. If institutions are not SACS-accredited, other institutions and organizations can refuse to accept the validity of their programs and the degrees they confer.
"Fully 82 percent of institutions' Fifth Year reports have issues that must be addressed," said Linda Scuiletti, CCCC dean of Institutional Effectiveness, whose office created the college's Fifth Year Report. "That CCCC's report passed the SACSCOC review process with no referrals or follow-ups is remarkable."
SACS accredits institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, as well as some in Latin America and other international sites that award associate, baccalaureate, master's, or doctoral degrees. CCCC is required to meet the same stringent SACS standards as all undergraduate institutions, including the University of North Carolina, Duke University, N.C. State University, and others.
Every 10 years, the COC does a major accreditation review for member institutions. Each college and university is also required to submit a Fifth-Year Interim (Reaffirmation) Report. The COC reviews it and informs the institution if there are any issues that need correcting for continued accreditation.
CCCC's comprehensive Fifth-Year Interim Report included a college-wide reflection/self-evaluation that involved an in-depth examination of numerous data. Twenty-three administrators and instructors worked to develop detailed narratives addressing each of SACS' 19 accreditation principles. The resulting FYIR included nearly 500 supporting documents, the college's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Impact Report, and more than 3,000 pages of Outcomes and Assessments reporting data from all curriculum programs and many service areas.
"Central Carolina Community College has been continuously accredited by SACS since 1972," said President Bud Marchant. "This and the fact that CCCC is among the 18 percent that came away from the fifth year review with no referrals or follow-ups says a great deal about this institution and its commitment to quality education. I am so proud of Linda and the entire faculty and staff who contributed to the Interim Report."

CCCC Relay for Life News
Colleagues,
For more than a decade, CCCC has participated in Lee County's Relay for Life, an annual walk to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The 2014 team, comprised of faculty, staff, and administrators, has four ways you can support its efforts this year.
1. Join us! If you and any of your family members, friends, or students wish to be part of the CCCC team, they are welcome. New members can join by visiting www.leencrelay.com and clicking "Sign Up." Follow prompts to join the Central Carolina Community College team.
2. Make a contribution by visiting www.leencrelay.com and clicking the "Donate" > "Donate to a Team" link. There follow the prompts to make your secure online donation to the CCCC team.
3. Purchase a luminary in honor or memory of someone who has been touched by cancer. Luminaries are $10 each or three for $25. These special lights with the names of your loved ones will line the track during a ceremony of memory the night of the Relay for Life event. Luminaries can be purchased from the CCCC team page or by contacting Bianka Stumpf at bstumpf@cccc.edu or Amanda Carter at abcarter@cccc.edu.
4. Support one of this semester's upcoming fund-raisers. Details will be forthcoming about the Beauty for Life spa event and the next Soup and Sandwich for Life lunch.

CCCC's Marchant named Herald's Citizen of the Year
Dr. T.E. "Bud" Marchant, president of Central Carolina Community College since 2008, has been selected as The Sanford Herald's 2013 Citizen of the Year. In its Jan. 19 announcement of the recognition, The Herald praised Marchant for his work as an ambassador for the college and the college's role as an economic development tool for the region. Prior to coming to CCCC, Marchant served as vice president for Educational Affairs at Piedmont Technical College, Greenwood, S.C.

Let's continue the momentum from our Professional Development Day into the new year by signing up for sessions from our Spring PD calendar.
All sessions will be held on the Lee Campus in the Smart conference room/Fitness building #810 starting January 31, 2014 and ending May 2, 2014. We will also continue our pilot of live streaming and connecting to the Smart Rooms on the Pittsboro and Harnett campuses.

Order of the Long Leaf Pine
Former Central Carolina Community College presidents, Dr. J.F. "Jeff" Hockaday, Dr. Marvin R. Joyner, and Dr. Matthew S. Garrett have been named to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Pat McCrory. The CCCC family is invited to celebrate with them as they are presented their certificates conferring upon them the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary in the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. The presentation will take place during a reception at the Bell Building Welcome Center at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 4.
The order of the Long Leaf Pine, established in 1963, is a prestigious award that the governor of North Carolina can bestow. It is given only to those who have a long record of extraordinary service to the state or their community.
Sanford Rotary Club Guest Speaker
On February 4, Matt Van Hoose, Coordinator of Grants and Sponsored Programs, spoke at the Sanford Rotary Club. Van Hoose explained to members how grant funds are used in several different programs at CCCC, such as the Duel Enrollment program, and the NC Back to Work program that targets long-term unemployed individuals in furthering their education and credentials. Van Hoose also coordinates all major funding proposals for the Central Carolina Works initiative for CCCC. In appreciation for Van Hoose speaking at the Rotary Club meeting, a dual-language book will be donated to the Lee County Library in his name.

The Green Office and Sustainability Committee invite you to participate in Phase II of our Green Office Challenge 2014! As you may have seen, last year we had a great time and helped each other achieve new awareness of our carbon footprints. This year we'd like to expand with your involvement in the Green Office Challenge. We can all make a difference even in small ways and in turn help the environment, our college and our community. Please check out the information and think about joining us in our quest to be more sustainable. Returning teams please complete and submit a new registration form. Kathy Farley
Practical Nursing Instructor
- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. I have been with CCCC since October 2010.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. As a child, I wanted to be a nurse and a teacher. Now at CCCC, I have the privilege of both! While completing my MSN in nursing education, I received a job announcement notification in my email. When God opens a door for me, I believe I am meant to walk through.
- Q. Describe what you do for the College.
- A. I teach classroom and clinical nursing in the PN program in Pittsboro to some of the greatest men and women ever!
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. I was born in Lincolnton, NC.
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. I was born and raised in the small town of Lincolnton, NC.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. I received my LPN through the U.S. Army in 1984, Associate in Applied Science from Regent's College, USNY, Bachelors and Masters from Indiana Wesleyan University. I am currently working on a DNP with Indiana Wesleyan.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. I live in Broadway, NC.
- Q. Marital status?
- A. I am married to my best friend, Flint Farley, for the past 29 years. We will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary in October.
- Q. Do you have children/grandchildren?
- A. I have four children- two homegrown sons and two Liberian daughters. My oldest son received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Finance with a minor in International business. He recently returned from the Peace Corps in Kenya. My younger son went to an auto body program with Nashville Auto Diesel College and has served in the military as well. He currently uses his painting skills for a company in Virginia. My oldest daughter is a CNA through CCCC and has taken the Phlebotomy course here, too. She will be taking her national exams in February. My younger daughter is making her own way in Missouri. I have grand dogs, but no grandchildren yet.
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. I am currently working on my DNP through Indiana Wesleyan University. This takes up much of my time. I am dedicated to my church, SanLee Chapel, and volunteer/serve whenever I can. I also collect eggs. I have all kinds from hand painted ostrich eggs to fine porcelain.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. Aim as high as you're able. I was a high school dropout due to circumstances of my own making. We don't have to stay where we are- we can continue to strive ever higher. In the words of Mother Teresa, "I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples." Cast stones!

We regretfully announce the passing of Robert Hammond's 7-week-old Grandson who passed away on February 10, 2014. The memorial service was held Sunday, February 16, 2014 at Winterville Baptist Church in the fellowship hall at 2593 Church St., Winterville, NC 28590. The church webpage is wintervillebaptist.org.
We regretfully announce the passing of Andy McMahan's father, Butch McMahan, who passed away January 27, 2014. A memorial service was held in Decatur, Ga. on Thursday, January 30.
