CCCC EOP Participates in "Operation Christmas Child"

Our EOP members made and delivered 13 boxes of goodies to the First Presbyterian Church for little girls and boys.

The boxes were packed with items such as tooth brushes, ribbons, car toys, coloring books and crayons, soap, hard candy, pens and pencils, socks, calculators, etc... and of course most of all, we packed each box with lots of love.

All boxes collected will eventually make their way to many needy little girls and boys all over the world.

Central Carolina Community College Association of Educational Office Professionals, (CCCCAEOP), made a donation of $250.00 to Buddy, the Therapy Dog and his owner, J.R. Poe of Broadway.

This dynamic duo makes their way to many nursing homes, businesses, hospitals and other places where Buddy is able to offer hope and healing.

A few of the places that Buddy visits on a regular basis are: Central Carolina Hospital, UNC Chapel Hill Cancer Center, Wesley Long Hospital and Moses Cone Hospital.

Buddy and Poe volunteer their time so they may spread a little peace and happiness to as many patients as possible.

Benefits of animal-assisted therapy

Animal-assisted therapy has been shown to help children who have experienced abuse or neglect, patients undergoing chemotherapy or other difficult medical treatments, and veterans and their families who are struggling to cope with the effects of wartime military service, according to the American Humane Association. According to experts with the Delta Society, a non-profit animal-assisted therapy organization, interaction with dogs, has been found to lower blood pressure, steady rapid breathing, reduce levels of stress hormones and increase levels of calming hormones.

These two projects are examples of the many ways EOP members give to others throughout the year.

News From the Library

The Library is conducting our fall survey and we need your input on how we are doing and how we can improve. Survey results help us measure our outcomes for our annual Outcomes & Assessment report, as well as help us plan for future library services and resources. The survey will run from November 15th through December 4th. Please take a few minutes to respond using the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2013CCCCLibrary. Thanks in advance for your participation!

Did you know that our library's Integrated Search has dramatically increased our database usage statistics? With the implementation of the Integrated Search in fall 2012, our monthly library database statistics have increased by 401% from September 2012 (16,426 searches) to September 2013 (115,845 searches), and by 605% from October 2012 (27,645 searches) to October 2013 (138,508 searches). In this fiscal year, we have already seen a 70% increase in database use from July through October 2013 (274,588 searches) over our database use for all of last fiscal year (161,274 searches). These numbers are unprecedented in our library database usage history!

The Integrated Search allows you to search several or all of our online databases simultaneously, along with our library catalog and online eBook collections. This saves time by providing a convenient one-search approach to searching the library's many resources. The new Integrated Search widget on our library web page allows for selecting groups of resources to search by subject or by type of resource. Aggregate search results allows one to choose which results to view and provides links directly to the article, the eBook, or the catalog record. A password is required for off-campus access. Please contact the library at 919-718-7244 for the Integrated Search password or for more information.

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?
A.   Two years this past August

A.   I enjoy teaching and the networking field is where I desire most to teach. CCCC gave me that opportunity as well leading my own department.
Q.   Describe what you do for the College.
A.   Foremost I am an instructor teaching in the networking field. I am also the Department Chair of Networking Technologies.
Q.   Where were you born?
A.   Keyser, West Virginia
Q.   Where did you grow up?
A.   Keyser, West Virginia
Q.   Educational credentials?
A.    I have an M.S. degree in Computer Information Systems from Boston University.
Q.   Where do you live now?
A.   Sanford
Q.   Marital status?
A.   Married to the love of my life.
Q.   Do you have children/grandchildren?
A.    I have no biological children but three step-children and nine wonderful grandchildren.
Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
A.    My wife, Cindy, and I love to travel and spend time with family. We also like bicycle and motorcycle riding when weather permits. I suspect I also spend too much time surfing the Internet.
Q.   Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
A.    It's a joy to be here. I've worked at a couple colleges and find here I get to work with some of the best students I've ever had. The support staff are excellent people always willing to help and display great patience with my questions and sometimes tardy delivery of requested documents. I also appreciate the administrative support and the latitude they give Chairs in running their departments. I do have one complaint though, not enough snow.
