WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC

ESPN Broadcast Featuring Joe Robinson!

Below is a clip from this past Saturday's ESPN broadcast featuring none other than our very own beloved Joe Robinson! Joe played cornerback on the defense for the NC State Wolfpack under Lou Holtz 40 years ago when they won the ACC tournament. In fact, Joe was named ACC player of the week one week for making two interceptions in one game! If you watch the clip, you can see Joe standing on the NCSU field this past Saturday along with his teammates, receiving honor and adulation from the school and fans. He has made the most of his talent and experiences, parlaying his education at NCSU into a biotech and teaching career, and continuing his involvement in football through coaching. We truly have a legend in our midst!

News From the Library

Fourth Annual Haunted Library

The Lee Library will hold its fourth annual Haunted Library from October 25th- 31st. Stop by for a trick or treat and see our Halloween decorations. See our fun video preview by clicking here.

It's not too late to schedule a library instruction session for your class with one of our fabulous librarians! To schedule a session on searching our databases and/or other research skills, contact Amy Gustavson at 919-718-7435 for the Lee and Harnett campuses, Ellen Dickey at 919-718-7459 for Lee and Harnett evening classes, or Dana Haven at 919-545-8088 for the Chatham campus. You will be glad you did, and your students will thank you!

Sue Boyd, Early Childhood/Sociology Instructor, had this to say about our librarians and her sociology students' experiences with library instruction classes:

"Although each librarian has a different style, I was greatly impressed with the results. The students were able to confidently use the databases, understand what to look for, and they were able to link their understanding to the chapter in the textbook. I was very impressed with the team approach that the librarians used in developing their lessons. The presentations all had the same goal and the results were fantastic. In addition, each librarian made themselves available for the students to go back to them if they needed additional help. I am impressed with the library staff and their capabilities!"

Reminder

We are still accepting order requests for books and general interest (non-instructional) DVDs. Requests may be submitted to Tara Guthrie at tguthrie@cccc.edu for the Lee and Chatham campuses, or to Barbara Wood at bwood@cccc.edu for the Harnett campus.

News From Human Resources

Please join us in congratulating two outstanding employees: Talia Friday, Academic Assistance Coordinator and Solomon McAuley, Men of Academic Distinction and Excellence (MADE)-COACH for their hard work and innovative thinking, which earned continued funding for the Minority Male Mentoring grant program: Men of Academic Distinction & Excellence (MADE) Scholars.

CCCC's proposal received the third highest composite score out of all proposals received throughout NCCCS. The proposals were scored on the following criteria: 1) needs and challenges, 2) program objectives, 3) implementation strategies, 4) anticipated benefits, 5) evaluation, dissemination, and replication, and 6) budget plan.

In 2012-13, CCCC's MADE Scholars program had a 100% spring-to-fall retention rate and a 69% fall-to-fall retention rate. Scholars earned 91% of college-level coursework attempted. In 2013-14, the program is being expanded to include WADE: Women of Academic Distinction & Excellence. The program already has 30 active participants in fall 2013.
