Happy 25th Anniversary to Triangle South Enterprise Center

In 1986, members of the Dunn Area Committee of 100, Inc., headed by William P. Elmore, thought the idea of a business incubator sounded pretty good. Mr. Elmore was on the Governor's Economic Development Board where he heard about business incubators and grants that were available through the N. C. Technological Development Authority.

Application was made and grant funds were awarded to establish the Triangle South Small Business Incubator. Members of the Committee of 100 were astute enough to realize a partner would enhance the operation, so they joined with Central Carolina Community College and its Small Business Center in Harnett County to open the incubator in 1987. After a few years as the Small Business Incubator, it was determined the name was just not catching on. Just because you build it, that does not mean they will come. The Dunn Area Committee of 100, Inc., decided to change the name to Triangle South Enterprise Center for marketing purposes along with starting a loan program with USDA-Rural Development to help the project survive. Triangle South Enterprise Center celebrates 25 successful years on Tuesday, Oct. 23, with a 25th Anniversary Celebration and Business After Hours with the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce from 5-7 p.m. The event is for Chamber members and invited guests. Nancy Blackman is director of Central Carolina Community College's Small Business Center in Harnett County, director of Triangle South Enterprise Center, and director of the Dunn Area Committee of 100, Inc. Send comments or column ideas to her at nblackman@cccc.edu.

Canada Geese Visit CCCC

These Canada geese were obviously on their way along the gravel road that leads to the Small Business Center (sign, back left) on the Lee County Campus on Aug. 29 - perhaps to talk about setting up their own goose down small business. At the curve in the road, they were distracted by all the excitement at the Annual Boomer Expo at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center (out of the photo to the right).

They finally decided to keep to their migratory schedule and took off, flying northeast over the campus.

News From Green Central

We hope everyone is enjoying their "green gift" from CCCC EOP (Educational Office Professionals), a partner of the Sustainability Committee. Plants are being distributed throughout common areas of our campuses to share one green idea: having plants in your office area will improve your work environment. As a reminder, please transfer your plant to a permanent, recycled, planter and display in a visible area to provide encouragement to go "green". CCCC EOP has also launched a dedicated "green" page in their newsletter to encourage members to be conscious of reducing waste, decreasing energy consumption, and other ideas that can contribute toward us working and living in a sustainable environment. The Sustainability Committee would like to encourage other campus groups to consider ways in which their organization could join in helping inspire staff and students to participate in making all CCCC campuses more sustainable. Please watch for upcoming news in Staff Announcements and Cougar Bytes, about the "GO (Green Office) Challenge"; an opportunity for all faculty and staff to support the college's mission to conserve resources and create a healthy planet for us all. CCCC is committed to conserving energy, reducing waste and reusing materials when possible. The Sustainability Committee would like to know what you are doing in your office towards these efforts. Please take this survey to let us know how the college is meeting these goals, and how we can support your efforts. The survey is intended for all CCCC employees to fully assess our efforts. Thank you, Laura Lauffer.
