WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC

2012 Spring Graduation Ceremony

Ellen Bland, of Chatham County, Central Carolina Community College Humanities instructor and CCCC Instructor of the Year, delivered the commencement address at the college's May 11 Spring Commencement. After cautioning the Class of 2012 not to let connectivity technology take the place of human connectivity, Bland surprised and wowed the students and audience by belting out 'The CCCC Graduation Blues,' a song she created especially for the occasion. Her listeners loved it.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Heather Willett

Heather Willett
Associate Dean of Student Services

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?
A.   I love that question because the answer is so interesting. I have worked for CCCC this time since Jan. 1, 2012, but I worked for CCCC back in 1995-1996 when I first started working in Financial Aid. So my total time is about 2 years.
Q.   What brought you to CCCC?
A.   Although the time I worked the first time for CCCC back in 1995-1996 was short, I always thought I would one day come back to CCCC. It is like coming home for me. As a graduate of CCCC, I have always held a place in my heart for this college, staff, and students. I wanted to give back to the school that did so much for me early in my educational journey. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to grow in higher education and work with deserving students on issues they encounter during their college years.
Q.   Describe what you do for the College.
A.   As Associate Dean of Student Services, I work with our Director of Student Life and our Financial Aid Office to ensure that our service to students is the best. I also work with residency issues and with our Evening Supervisor. I come from a financial aid background, so I know that improving our financial aid processes is essential to helping students succeed.
Q.   Where were you born?
A.   I was born in Hamlet, NC. My parents are Robert and Patricia Maloney. I have three younger brothers.
Q.   Where did you grow up?
A.   I grew up in Richmond County, NC, and graduated from Richmond Senior High. Yes, that makes me a Richmond Raider! My family owned two family restaurants in Hamlet, and I worked in the family business in my early years. Most of my family still resides in Richmond County, including my parents and my grandfather.
Q.   Educational credentials?
A.   First, I am proud to say that I am a CCCC graduate! I graduated with my AAS--Secretarial Science (Legal) degree in 1989. My educational credits are:
  • 1989--Associate in Applied Science--Secretarial Science (Legal), Central Carolina Community College
  • 2000--Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (Human Services), St. Andrews Presbyterian College
  • 2005--Master of Arts in Higher Education--Community College Administration, Western Carolina University
  • I am currently enrolled in the Master certificate--Sociology, Appalachian State University
Q.   Where do you live now?
A.   I live in Cameron
Q.   Marital status?
A.   Married for 25 years to David Willett, originally from Cumnock, NC.
Q.   Do you have children/grandchildren?
A.   I have one beautiful daughter, Jordan Willett, who turns 20 in June.
Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
A.   I enjoy boating, concerts, dancing, gardening, traveling, cooking, and entertaining friends and family. I have a place at Lake Tillery in Twin Harbor that is my home away from home. I also love to go to the beach and going on cruises. My next planned trips are to New Orleans and to Key West.
