Caterpillar Youth Apprentice Program Kicks Off

The kickoff for Caterpillar-Sanford Youth Apprenticeship in welding program was held at Lee County High School on February 29, 2012. The kickoff for education and community leaders celebrated the partnership among Caterpillar, Central Carolina Community College, Lee County Schools, and the N.C. Department of Labor. The partners have worked together in establishing the apprenticeship that will benefit students, industry and economic development. Cathy Swindell, Industry Services Director for CCCC, stated this week, "A lot of freshman and sophomore high school kids don't know about the options of skilled trades since a lot of high schools no longer operate vocational programs or machine shop curriculum. There is a shortage of skilled welders and we are happy to see so many kids interested in this program." Click here for full story.

CCCC Heroes

Teresa Butler, CCCC Barbering Instructor at the Western Harnett Center, had no idea that her fellow classmates, two Sheriff Deputies, and co-workers would be saving her life recently. At a spring break cookout, students and employees gathered for a social at the Western Harnett Center, on February 27, 2012. Ms. Butler did not realize that one of the side dishes of dip she tasted had crabmeat as one of the ingredients. As it became harder and harder for her to breathe, Walter Cotton, Barbering Chair and Eric Johnson, Maintenance Supervisor, with the assistance of others at the social, called 911. The group comforted Ms. Butler and gave her a life-saving injection until medical help arrived. Ms. Butler was taken to the emergency room at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford, NC and was released after several hours of treatment. Without the assistance of her group of friends at the Western Harnett Center, the outcome could have been much different. Thanks to all who helped a friend in need!

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Robert Barnes

Robert Barnes
History Instructor

Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?

A. I've worked as a history instructor for the college since 2007, and have been employed as a full time instructor for the last 2 years.

Q. What brought you to CCCC?

A. I was introduced to the college by friends who attended the Sustainable Agriculture Program in Pittsboro. On a campus visit, I noticed a job posting for an adjunct history instructor. I applied, and was fortunate enough to receive an opportunity from Carl Bryan and the Department of Social Science and Wellness. It was truly serendipity.

Q. Describe what you do for the college.

A. I am a full time history instructor, primarily working from Chatham County. Additionally, I serve as the faculty advisor to the SGA of Chatham County, I am on two writing works committees, and I frequently guest lecture on numerous historical topics. I also present Black History Month lectures on all three main campuses each year, and often offer free monthly lectures on a variety of topics. I've worked with Andy McMahan on creating a Disc Golf course on the Pittsboro Main Campus, which will be completed this semester. Finally, I serve as an academic advisor for the Associate in Arts and University Transfer Programs.

Q. Where were you born? Where did you grow up?

A. I'm an NC native son! I was born in Granville County, NC, and grew up in Moore and Wake counties. I attended college in Wilmington, and have family stretching from The Outer Banks, to Fayetteville and Boone.

Q. What are your education credentials?

A. I received a Bachelor of the Arts in Philosophy and Religion from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2003, and completed a Master of the Arts from UNC-W in 2005.

Q. Where do you live now?

A. Chapel Hill

Q. Marital status?

A. Happily married to my wonderful and beautiful wife Kati.

Q. Oddest Job?

A. I was a top salesman of jewelry and firearms at Jim's Gun and Pawn while I was in college. At that time I also worked part time for a bail bondsman. They were great after school jobs!

Q. How can the knowledge of history be applicable to our students as they enter work place?

A. It is important to study history, because it teaches an individual the importance of perspective. In a history class, students learn the relationships between precedents and consequences, a lesson that is invaluable in the business world, as well as day to day life. Having a working understanding of history also helps an individual make sense of the world in which they live.

Q. What areas of history are you most passionate about?

A. My favorite topics are the Classical Greek and Romans worlds, as well as the foundation of the early American Republic.

Q. We understand that you have some expertise in dog training. Could you give our readers the top three tips in training/purchasing a puppy?

Q. Lessons for puppy training and life:

A. A tired dog is a good and happy dog. It is important to burn off excess energy with exercise. Be sure you are putting in the hours of walks, jogs, and play which will ensure a healthy and happy animal.

Create a routine, and follow it consistently. Dogs benefit from a well enforced daily routine. This helps produce good habits. For example: Having trouble housebreaking a puppy? Try taking them for a long walk before you leave in the morning, and be sure that they've done their "business". As a bonus, while you are away the puppy will be too tired to chew up your stuff.

Love. Positive reinforcement is one of the most vital tools for the conditioning of a canine. Roll around on the floor with them, give lots of love and attention ... and treats.

Dear CCCC family, I want to thank everyone for the cards and their thoughts and prayers as I went through surgery to remove a pituitary tumor. Even though I am gone from CCCC, I now know that I am nowhere near forgotten. I am feeling great after the surgery and I know that is largely due to all the love and kindness that was shown to me by my former colleagues. I miss you all greatly! Sincerely, Michelle Nabonne, former admission specialist. michelenabonne@gmail.com

I would like to say a special thank you for all the emails, flowers, cards, phone calls, visits and prayers during my recent hospitalization and recovery. I am truly blessed to work with such caring people! Abby Walker
