CCCC Welding Students Work On Depot Park Train

The train at Depot Park in downtown Sanford has been a magnet for everyone from children to history buffs for almost a half-century. Old Steam Locomotive #12, built in 1919, has seen a lot of visitors. The old train is in the process of undergoing much needed maintenance and repair.

Several months ago, Steve Stewart, of the city's Building and Grounds Department, contacted Dr. Stephen Athans, Dean of the college's Vocational and Technical Programs, to see if the college could partner with the city on some of the work to be done.

Allen Howington, Chair of Industrial Systems Technology Department selected the nine students in the inert gas welding class at the Lee County Campus to work on this project. They spent 107 man-hours patching, grinding, and welding not only to improve the appearance of the train but also to make it safer for visitors. All are Associate in Applied Science in Industrial Systems Technology degree students. Several are also getting degrees in Bio-maintenance.

The class members, shown inside the engine are (from left) Pedro Gomez and David Holland, both of Sanford; Eric Buckner, of Raleigh; Donnie Fore, of Swanns Station; T.J. Laubach, of Sanford; Brad Powers, of Bear Creek; and Heath Tatum and Timothy Baldwin, both of Sanford. Student Jason Terrell, of Broadway, worked on the train, but is not pictured.

Mr. Atul, manager/owner of Firehouse Subs, personally told me to relay that the 10% discount is good throughout 2012. Just show CCCC ID when placing order, coupon isn't necessary. He really appreciates our patronage and invites us to enjoy his restaurant. By the way, the soda machine is really something!

Cougar Pets News

Is there room in your family and your life for a pet? Our candidates for adoption this month are worth considering. These animals, waiting patiently for permanent homes at the CCCC veterinary medical facility, are healthy, have all their shots, and have been spayed/neutered. They are ready to love you.

Two happy CCCC employees share their successful adoption of pets from CCCC's Veterinary Medical Facility, Adopt a Pet Program. Cathy Woelfle, Administrative Assistant, reports that she and husband Walter, adopted a beagle, Leroy Brown, in August of 2010. Leroy Brown is doing wonderful and not one of them has looked back since. Jill Gillette, Administrative Assistant, and her husband, decided to adopt a beagle named "Shadow" in December of 2011. Due to his history as a research dog, followed by his "position" here at the college, they were somewhat hesitant as to how he would adapt. Although it has only been a short while, Shadow has adjusted beyond their expectations. He is sweet, loving, well-behaved and house-broken! He has embraced visits from their 7 year-old grandson, and is sharing their home with a cat. We encourage anyone considering adopting a dog, or cat, to look no further than Cougar Pets; we feel certain you will not be disappointed.

Visit the Cougar Pets website at cougarpets.webs.com/index.html for more information and pictures of pets available for adoption. Call 919.718.7465 or email jloftis@cccc.edu if you want to adopt.
