WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC

College Yearbooks and History Now Online!

The College's collection of yearbooks dating from 1967 to 1986 have been pulled from the Library archives and digitized into an eBook format. The same has been done with yearbooks from the Veterinary Medical Technology program (from 1995 to 2005) and a book written on the history of the college, A History of Central Carolina Community College: the first forty years by Avron B. Upchurch. These books are now available through the NC Digital Heritage Center web site at: digitalnc.org/institutions/central-carolina-community-college. A link to these books will also available on the Library web page under Online Resources - College History Collection.

The NC Digital Heritage Center is supported by Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the State Library of NC. Through its free digitization and online hosting services, the Digital Heritage Center provides libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and other cultural heritage institutions with the opportunity to publicize and share their rare and unique collections online.

The yearbooks will be a valuable tool for our Alumni Association in identifying past students and growing our Alumni program. A link to the yearbooks will be included on the Alumni web page (www.cccc.edu/alumni/) and also in the Alumni monthly newsletter (www.cccc.edu/alumni/socialmedia/).

With our yearbooks and College history now preserved digitally and available online, we can share these resources with the community as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary this year and in years to come. Now everyone can enjoy a trip down CCCC memory lane.

Cougar Pets News

Is there room in your family and your life for a pet? Our candidates for adoption this month are worth considering. These animals, waiting patiently for permanent homes at the CCCC veterinary medical facility, are healthy, have all their shots, and have been spayed/neutered. They are ready to love you.

Beau

Beau is an adult male beagle with a winning personality and a playful nature. He is always happy to take a human for a walk. Beau will easily fit into a family with children over the age of six years or would make a wonderful companion for an older person.

Barry

Barry is an adult male beagle that likes to have his ears scratched and is eager to make new friends. He would like to belong to someone willing to provide him with an infinite number of balls and sticks and be willing to learn how to fetch. Barry would be a good match for a family with older children or an adult who lives alone.

We are pleased to report that Mogli and Rascal, two beagles, have gone to permanent homes.

Visit the Cougar Pets website at cougarpets.webs.com/index.html for more information and pictures of pets available for adoption. Call 919.718.7465 or email jloftis@cccc.edu if you want to adopt.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Helen Cotton

Helen Cotton
Recruiter, Adult Education

When Helen Cotton left school and went to work for Carnes Corp., a manufacturer of HVAC equipment in Sanford, she made a career of it. When the Carnes facility in Sanford closed its door 33 years later, she was left adrift. It was a new world and one full of challenges. Helen had decades of valuable experience but she lacked an important credential: She didn't have a high school diploma.

Helen had a lot of other things going for her, though, among them an unshakeable optimism and a determination to provide for her family. She headed for CCCC's GED program and earned her diploma. She targeted the local pharmaceutical industry as a possible source of employment and entered the college's bioprocessing technology program. She became a vocal advocate for student interests and got to know the members of the City Council and the Lee County Commissioners. As an eloquent spokesman for students and their needs, she became acquainted with Dr. Matt Garrett, then president of the college. She continued to attend classes at CCCC.

In 2002, Helen went to work for CCCC, first as a receptionist in the Adult Education department, then as a recruiter. "This is a passion for me," she told us. "When I speak to people about the importance of a high school diploma in today's job market, I know what I'm talking about." She does, in fact, represent in her experience the possibilities that exist at the college for anyone willing to take the trouble to discover them.

When Helen is not working or pursuing her personal lifelong learning journey, her leisure time is devoted to her extensive family. If the last name is "Cotton," chances are, they are related. A son and a grandson work for the college. Two daughters live and work nearby in North Carolina. Helen is taking Spanish courses now so that she can better communicate her passion to the increasing number of Spanish speakers she is encountering in her work.
