WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

Fifty and Fabulous!

The college's 50th Anniversary Kickoff celebration July 23rd at the Emergency Services Training Center was a HUGE success! An estimated 1,500-2,000 visitors ignored the 100-degree heat to celebrate this college milestone with us.

Every part of the event: music, parking, Kids' Zones, fireworks, rappelling demonstration - and so much more - went smoothly and created a lot of good memories and good will for the college in the community. Even the Red Cross Blood Drive exceeded expectations.

A big, big "thank you" to the approximately 200 volunteers from the college faculty, staff, alumni and retirees. These folks worked in record-breaking heat for three days to set up, implement, and clean up. Kudos to the Kickoff coordinators: Emily Hare, Becky Howington, Crystal Smith, and Lorraine Whitaker, who made it all possible by their leadership, hard work, and months of meticulous planning.

CCCC Cougar Mascot Has A Name

Two people picked the perfect name for CCCC's mascot: Jill Gillette, who has recently joined the staff on the Sanford campus as Administrative Assistant to Dean Joni Pavlik, and Margaret Grigg, a recent graduate. The winning name, "Charlee," combines the first three letters of each of the counties the college serves. The Cougar himself gave his approval, introducing himself to attendees at the 50th Anniversary Kickoff as Charlee Cougar.

New Online Databases Available In Library

The CCCC Libraries now have new online databases available. Several new resources are available through Salem Press. You will notice that these are grouped into three areas: Salem Health, Salem History, and Salem Science. Salem Health includes the Magill's Medical Guide and Psychology and Mental Health. Salem History includes Milestone Documents in American History and Weapons and Warfare. Salem Science includes the Encyclopedia of Global Warming, the Encyclopedia of Global Issues, and Forensic Science. All of these are fully searchable database versions of the print editions (which the libraries also own), and are accessible on campus and from home with a password.

Another new resource is the Sharpe Online Reference (SOLR) database. Titles in this collection of online reference sources offer a unique, interdisciplinary approach to U.S. history, global history, culture, and social issues. Supplementary material includes primary documents, audio/visual clips and images, as well as links to approximately 1,000 reliable websites. Titles now available in this collection include: American Presidential Campaigns and Elections (1788-2008); Social Issues in America; American Social Movements; Latino History and Culture; Asian American History and Culture; America in World History; Global History - Cultural Encounters; and Conflicts Since World War II. This database is accessible on campus and from home with a password.

In partnership with the Small Business Center, we now have over 200 eBook titles, 16 eAudio Book titles, and 800 eVideo titles for business and economics. These collections are funded by the Small Business Center and are available on campus and from home with a password. The eBook and eAudio Book titles are available through NetLibrary, an eBook database available via NC LIVE. Lists of titles available are on the library web page at www.cccc.edu/library/resources/ under the description for Small Business eBooks & eAudio Books (via NetLibrary on NC LIVE). The eVideo titles are available through Films on Demand for a 3-year lease. Video segments can be easily embedded into your Blackboard courses.

Please take a look at these new resources, as well as our other online databases, to see how you might incorporate these into your classes. Passwords for home access to all databases are available on the Intranet under the Library's helpful files. If you would be interested in bringing your class to the library for instruction on any of our databases, please contact Mary Coleman, Reference and Instruction Librarian, at 718-7340. We look forward to seeing you in the library!

CCCC Achieves Silver Designation in STARS Reporting

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced that more than 100 colleges and universities have earned a rating in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) during the past year. With deadlines earlier this week, 104 institutions submitted their reports; 22 received a gold rating, 55 received a silver rating, and 21 received a bronze rating. CCCC submitted their report, earning a Silver rating.

This yearlong process assessed sustainability elements college wide including affordability and access, facilities, curriculum, and continuing education programs, and purchasing. CCCC is one of a dozen community colleges in the nation participating in the STARS assessment. Our rating is Silver; we are on our way to Gold when we resubmit in three years! This accomplishment was achieved thanks to the many numbers crunchers and data miners at CCCC- thanks to all of you who helped Green Central document our sustainability performance.

To see the entire report go to https://stars.aashe.org/institutions/central-carolina-community-college-nc/report/2011-08-02/ login is llauffer@cccc.edu, password is green2020

The Construction 1 class in CCCC's Sustainable Technologies program will be building a house! The instructor, John Delafield, is selecting a small house design to demonstrate green building elements including passive solar design, efficiency, local products and enhanced indoor air quality. The construction II class will complete the house in Spring; the house will be auctioned upon completion. Stay tuned to Cougar Bytes this semester as we provide updates and pictures!

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Janelle Hart

Janelle Hart
Coordinator for Accreditation & QEP

Janelle Hart tells us that moving from a small town in Ohio to Sanford, N.C. is not that difficult. "There are many similarities," she said, adding, "My husband comes from Kentucky and he's delighted to be somewhere he can get sweet tea to drink." The Hart family - Janelle, her husband, Christopher, and their two-year-old son, Samuel - made a fast transition, arriving in Sanford on a Thursday and renting a townhouse in west Sanford on Friday. Janelle reported for work on the Sanford campus the following Monday.

Janelle has been in her new position for about a month now and describes it as "instant immersion." She explained that the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) at CCCC has a unifying theme: to improve student learning. The program is based on improving student writing skills as a tool for better learning. It is designed by our own faculty and staff and is specific to the needs of our community.

In addition to coordinating the QEP program, Janelle is responsible for making sure the college meets the accreditation standards of the Southern Association of College and Schools (SACS). CCCC is due for its five-year review in 2013 and it is Janelle's job to quantify and support all of the information in the college's report. "We met all of SACS requirements at the last review," she said, "But the school has grown and changed so much in the last few years that it is a different institution now." Those changes, ranging from new programs to new buildings to new college sites will probably mean a visit from the accrediting body in 2013, something that always presents a challenge.

Janelle's last position was assistant professor at Ohio Northern University. She holds a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of Kentucky, Lexington. Her bachelor's degree in chemistry was earned at Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. Her scientific discipline transfers very well to her new job, particularly since she has experience with program accreditation, project management, and institutional research.

The Hart family is spending their spare time discovering what Sanford has to offer. They have visited the farmer's market and have discovered Steele Street. Janelle recently won tickets to the new production at the Temple Theatre. As for Samuel, just give him a shovel and let him dig in our clay and sand soil and he's happy.
