WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

CCCC's President's Cup Awarded to Western Harnett HS

Pictured (from left) are WHHS counselors Cynthia Wood and Shannon Bradley; Dr. Stephen Athans, CCCC Dean of Vocational and Technical Programs; WHHS Principal William Wright Jr.; Bill Tyson, CCCC Harnett County Provost; WHHS counselor Reginald Lowery; and Dr. Lisa Chapman, CCCC Vice President of Academic Affairs.

CCCC's Information and Planning Conference committee came up with a great idea to encourage the high schools in the college's service area of Chatham, Harnett and Lee counties to send even more of their graduates to the college. Each year, the high school with the highest percentage of its graduating class enrolling at CCCC will be presented the President's Cup to keep until the next IPC, held annually in November. Western Harnett High School is the first to receive the President's Cup. Nineteen percent of its 2010 graduating class attended CCCC this year. The official presentation of the Cup was made June 13 at the high school. Pictured (from left) are WHHS counselors Cynthia Wood and Shannon Bradley; Dr. Stephen Athans, CCCC Dean of Vocational and Technical Programs; WHHS Principal William Wright Jr.; Bill Tyson, CCCC Harnett County Provost; WHHS counselor Reginald Lowery; and Dr. Lisa Chapman, CCCC Vice President of Academic Affairs. CCCC ceramics instructor Joyce Bryan created the multi-color glazed bowl. Joyce is also a professional potter with her own business, Stone Crow Pottery, in Pittsboro. Other high schools sending double-digit percentages of their 2010 graduates to CCCC were Southern Lee (17.42 percent), Lee County (15.51 percent), Northwood (13.93 percent), and Chatham Central (12.84 percent).

Barbara Avery, Nena Leake, Len Royals, Bill Tyson, Lennie Stevenson, Dorothy McKoy, Robert Baggett, Melody McGee, Michael Morrison, and Joseph Pope arrived early Saturday morning, June 11 to make sure that the class would have chicken, pulled pork, ribs, and brisket for the hands-on judging portion of the class. The cooks were: Mark Byrd and Adam Byrd.

Don Harwell, a certified Kansas City Barbeque Society judge, taught the class. Students who successfully completed the one-day course are qualified to judge KCBS sanctioned competitions around the country.

Green Central Update

CCCC is known as Green Central due to its focus on sustainability in the classroom, on campuses and in our strategic plan. Last semester, over 100 faculty members responded to a curriculum survey and over 50% were either integrating sustainability into their classes or were planning to. The diversity of departments responding positively was a pleasant surprise, the humanities were very well represented but we also had strong responses from the sciences and business disciplines.

The goal of sustainability education is to provide students, regardless of their courses of study, the knowledge and skills to help create a healthy economy, society, and environment. The College strategic plan states that sustainability will be incorporated in to 60% of college programs by Fall 2013 and one sustainability related college event will take place on each campus each year.

For more information on how to integrate sustainability issues into your program, please contact Laura Lauffer, Sustainability Coordinator at (919) 545-8032 or llauffer@cccc.edu. Each month the Green Central Update will offer a web based resource for faculty and staff. This month we are featuring The Environmental and Energy Resources online library. EERL's mission is to be the best possible online collection of environmental and energy sustainability resources for community college educators and for their students. Funded by the National Science Foundation -check them out at www.eerl.org/index.php.

Foundation's 11th Annual Furniture Auction

This handsome wood cabinet, with two matching stools, was one of about 100 hand-crafted pieces of wood and metal work auctioned off at the Central Carolina Community College Foundation's 11th annual Furniture Auction June 4 at the Harnett County Campus. The 2011 auction was the largest in the event's history. With a strong showing of support from the community, the auction raised more than $25,000. The proceeds will be used by the Foundation to fund an endowment that provides scholarship monies for Harnett County students who attend CCCC. Students in the college's carpentry and welding programs at the Harnett Correctional Institution created the well-built pieces. The student inmates also learned marketable skills to become contributing members of their communities upon release.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Sara Lambert

Sara Lambert
Basic Skills Coordinator,
Siler City Center

"This new facility is a realization of dreams, provides new opportunities and celebrates the future of Central Carolina Community College, Siler City and the local workforce," Sara Lambert told the dignitaries and community residents gathered for the ribbon cutting of the new Siler City Center on November 15, 2010.

We talked to Sara recently, curious to know how the move had gone from the former Henry B. Siler School that had housed CCCC's adult education program since 1984. "We left the old building for the last time with tears in our eyes," Sara told us. "It is the repository of many good memories."

In April, the new Siler City Center building was certified at the Gold Level of USGBC's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Sara told me that she and her colleagues find it golden in many ways. "The way the building was planned and constructed, the advanced technology inherent in its systems, makes it a fascinating and fun place to work," she told us. "We are pleased and proud to invite the community in." She went on to explain that the college's Siler City facility now provides a much larger and richer resource for the area it serves. Two new certificate programs are being offered along with a doubling in the number of medical classes. The building is now home center for the sculpture program, as well.

Sara earned her B.S. in Business Administration from University of Illinois at Urbana/Champlain. She started working for the college as a teacher in the Basic Skills program 21 years ago. She became a full time administrator for the Siler City Center six years ago. "It has been challenging and interesting," she said. "The college is a pioneer in offering cutting edge opportunities to its students and so our programs are continually growing and changing." She misses teaching and enjoys returning to the classroom occasionally to fill in for an absent colleague.

Sara lives with her husband, Craig, in Siler City. Craig is an exceptional American for these times: He has had only one employer in his working life, and still sells seeds and agricultural products for the company he started with. Craig and Sara have three grown kids. Their first grandchild, Jackson, is three months old and the light of their lives. They are both active in their church with music being an enduring interest. Sara serves on the Chatham Literacy Council and devotes as much time as she can spare to NCSTEP, an organization founded to assist small business in the Chatham community.
