WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC

Jim Felton Honored at Retirement Reception

Jim Felton Honored

Jim Felton, director of the college's Small Business Center and director of the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center since 1995, was honored by the college, business community, and State of North Carolina at his February 22 retirement reception at the Civic Center.

Dr. George Millsaps, State Director of the N.C. Small Business Center Network and N.C. Assistant Commissioner for Small Business, presented a certificate of appreciation to Jim from Gov. Beverly Perdue for his "dedication and outstanding service to the Great State of North Carolina."

Millsaps noted that, in his years at CCCC, Jim counseled more than 1,000 individuals who were interested in starting a business. From those, more than 100 businesses were established which have created and retained more than 400 jobs in Lee County. He also oversaw more than $10 million in small business loans.

"It's been a wonderful time," Jim said. "I'm pleased and proud to be part of this community. It's not me - it's the team that makes things happen, the business people we've worked with."

Our latest (and quite exciting!) opportunity to raise much-needed dollars for the American Cancer Society is now LIVE and is being dubbed SHOP FOR A CURE!

Here's how shopping can help our team fight for a cure. We have two product line fundraisers that are probably familiar to you and your co-workers, friends, and family. We have online party sites for both Thirty-One and Tupperware that are linked below.

Thirty-One: www.mythirtyone.com/shop/eventhome.aspx?eventId=E524632&from=MYEVENTS

Tupperware: order.tupperware.com/pls/htprod_www/!twx$eparty_ctl
.p_guest_welcome?pv_eparty=a20685df04e12dff0ab1ec465292c1d8

All you and those you know have to do is visit these links to purchase products to benefit our Relay team. The items are selected and paid for entirely online and shipped directly to the buyer's home. We never touch the merchandise. Our team keeps half the consultant's commission on all Thirty-One purchases and 40% of your product order total for Tupperware buys.

We encourage you to do some shopping yourselves and also to forward to anyone and everyone you know via email, word of mouth, or Facebook. The party links are functional now through March 7, 2011.

If you have additional questions, please let one of the CCCC team captains know. We stand to make a lot of precious dollars for the cause. Thanks in advance for your help.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Brian Merritt

Brian Merritt
Director of Grants, Sponsored Programs and Alumni Relations
Lee County

This college, faced with challenging economic times, needs to identify and tap all available resources to survive. Brian Merritt, who reported for work on February 7th, is one of the secret weapons designed to effectively implement this strategy. Brian explained his inclusive approach to grant writing this way: "It's simple. Everybody shares the work load." He went on to explain that he sees his function as part catalyst and part teacher. He will help faculty and staff members translate their perceived needs into fundable projects, assist in identifying funding sources, and then work with them in writing the grant proposal. "Eventually, we will have a core of experienced grant writers who know how to go where the money is."

To facilitate the process, there will soon be a grants website at cccc.edu and an online submission form for anyone with a bright idea or an ongoing need that needs funding. In addition, Brian has a grant handbook and a grant writing checklist in the works.

Brian is already starting to reach out to the communities the college serves and to our alumni to form partnerships. Brian's goal is to forge strong ongoing connections between people who have graduated from this institution and the college. He wants to get them engaged and make sure they know we value them and want to stay in touch with them.

Brian is coming back to CCCC after serving as a Distance Education Counselor here from 2007 to 2008. He spent the interim at NC Central University as Associate Director of Orientation and First Year Experience. He is currently working on his Ph.D. in Education at Walden University. He earned his M.A. in Higher Education Administration and his B.S. in Social Sciences Education at Appalachian State University. He and his wife, Jessi, currently reside in Durham where Jessi works in real estate and property management. Their immediate family consists of Baker, a golden retriever, and Bentley, a very bossy Shih Tzu.

Both Brian and Jessi have large families here in North Carolina and most of their spare time is family time, although they try to find time to play tennis and do some recreational reading.
