Chinese Musicians Wow Audience

The Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center filled Sunday with beautiful music from China as the college's Confucius Classroom hosted the March Rain Ensemble of Nanjing Normal University's College of Music. The ensemble performed on traditional Chinese instruments, playing a variety of folk and modern Chinese songs, from lyrical tone poems to fast-paced works. Performing were (from left) Dingchen Xu, on the dizi, a flute; Ziyin Wu, on the erhu, a violin-type instrument; Siting Wang, on the yangqing, a hammered dulcimer; Qi Bao, on the lute-like pipa; and Jingyu Wu, on the zither-like guzheng. The ensemble received a standing ovation from the audience.

If you missed this memorable performance, you still have time to reserve your free tickets for the Chinese dance, music, and martial arts performance coming to the Civic Center on November 7th from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please call (919) 718-7268 to reserve tickets.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC

CCCC and Chatham County Celebrate New Green Buildings

Chatham County and Central Carolina Community College celebrated "an exciting and momentous day" Sept. 20, as CCCC President Bud Marchant expressed it.

A crowd estimated at more than 600 county residents, college and elected officials, and other dignitaries gathered at the college's Chatham County Campus for the ribbon cutting and open house for the college's new Sustainable Technologies Center and the joint county-college Chatham Community Library.

Marchant welcomed the crowd for the historic occasion. He credited the completion of the new buildings to the members of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, their willingness to provide the funding for them and their vision in seeing what the new facilities can mean to the county for education and economic development.

"This library reflects the importance this college and community put on learning," said speaker George Lucier, who is both a Chatham County commissioner and a trustee of the college. "It's also impressive to think of what the Sustainable Technologies Center will do for us in economic development. When companies see these buildings, they will know that we are committed."

Ribbon Cutting

Cheers broke out as George Lucier (center) Chatham County commissioner and college trustee, cut the ribbon at the Sept. 20 open house.

CCCC Lifelong Learning Center Hosts an Open House

Lifelong Learning Center

In celebration of Lee County Adult Education, Continuing Education, and Workforce Development, the public was invited to an open house at the W.B. Wicker Business Campus on October 14th. The CCCC dental hygiene and dental assisting programs are also located at Wicker.

Many who came for the open house were alumni and former teachers at W.B. Wicker School, which was built in the 1920s with partial funding by the Rosenwald Foundation. The foundation helped fund the construction of many schools in the South for black children and youth in the early part of the 20th century. Wicker is one of the few remaining Rosenwald schools and has been placed on the U.S. Interior Departmentis list of historical places.

Charles Lazarus In Concert at Temple Theater

On November 12, 2010, at 8:00 p.m. at the Temple Theatre in Sanford, we are featuring a fantastic trumpet player, Charles Lazarus.

His program entitled "Night in the Tropics" will be one of the most special concerts presented in our 20 year history. It is also very exciting to be presenting Charles because he is a native of Sanford, and he has achieved much in the music world. Some special notes about him are that he graduated from the NC School of the Arts and the Julliard School of Music, was a member of the Dallas Brass, and now is with the Minnesota Symphony Orchestra while he also pursues his jazz career on the international stage.

Friends of the Library Present NC Writer Bland Simpson

Please join the Friends of the Chatham Community Library on Thursday, November 18th at 7:30 p.m. at the new Chatham Community Library for a special guest, author Bland Simpson, whose many books on North Carolina's coastal areas continue to please readers who already know and love them and entice others to experience some unforgettable places.

Our guest will talk about his new work, The Coasts of Carolina, a joint project with noted photographer Scott Taylor. As natives of the area, the collaborators venture beyond the familiar uncovering places of uncommon delight that most visitors rarely see. Their work celebrates the beauty of this amazing region and embodies their distinctive sense of what makes the North Carolina coast so special.

Bland Simpson is a Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also a musician - a longtime member of the Tony Award-winning Red Clay Ramblers. We anticipate that our guest will treat us to a sample of the music that has made this group so well loved.

Friends programs will be regularly held at the new Chatham Community Library in the Holmes Family Meeting Room, 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Cougar Pet News

We are featuring two animals this month who are currently residing in the CCCC Veterinary Technology facility on the Sanford campus and who need loving and responsible homes. All animals will be spayed/neutered and up-to-date on their shots when adopted.

Baxter and Barry are both adult beagles and have the easy going, fun loving temperament characteristic of that breed. They are easy to care for and would make good companions for someone who lives alone or for a senior. Either would fit into a family environment happily as long as the children are old enough to be respectful.

Contributions Needed For Sanford Used Bookstore

Two non-profits, focused on family support and preparing young children for success, hope to provide Lee County with a "gently-used" bookstore that will provide financial support for both non-profits, promote literacy growth, and ensure continuous services for our children and families. Offering an affordable opportunity for purchasing books will be an extension to what both organizations promote: literacy, family support, and success for children.

Coalition for Families of Lee County and the Lee County Partnership for Children are working together to make this project a reality. Please call Keisha Petty to find out where you can donate your gently used books at (919) 718-7276.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Sue Whitman

Sue Whitman
Industry Services and SBC Assistant

When Sue Whitman was given the opportunity to expand her responsibilities and make her job twice as interesting, she accepted the challenge. Sue has been working with Cathy Swindell in the Industry Services program since January 2007. Effective July 1st of this year, the Lee Small Business Center moved from the Civic Center to join Industry Services in Cedar House, their headquarters on the Sanford campus. Sue will be supporting a new SBC Director, yet to be named, as well as continuing to work with Industry Services and Cathy Swindell.

Sue earned her B.A. in elementary education with a minor in math from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. Sue and her husband, Ed, have two sons and a daughter, all grown now, and four grandchildren. Sue and Ed were residents of Sanford from 1996 to 2001, when Ed worked as Human Resources Director for Eagle Industries. During that time, Sue worked with the Lee County Economic Development Council. They left in 2001, but returned in 2007 when Ed accepted a job with Static Industries here in Sanford.

Sue tells us that her work with the Small Business Center is different from the industry training and worker retraining that the Industry Services program does for manufacturers in the CCCC service area. "The two programs share a similar goal," she told us, "Keeping the local economy strong and productive. I'll be working with entrepreneurs just getting started in business. The contrast will be fascinating."
