WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

Circle of Excellence Honors Outstanding Service

Marchant makes a whole in one

Diane Glover and Abby Walker, with the help of many creative and energetic volunteers, presided over a three-campus whirlwind of activities during the 2010 Campus Fund Drive. Dr. Bud Marchant set a standard of excellence for the college by hitting a hole in one on the first hole of the Mini Golf Tournament on the Lee County Campus. Two teams competed in friendly competition in the Frisbee Golf tournament, mentored by Rocky Geist, who made everyone participating feel like a winner. Faculty and staff also took advantage of free facials and massages.

Members of all departments with a 100% participation in the campaign were treated to free lunch by the Foundation. The fund drive wraps up today with drawings for prizes, a Superball Golf Tournament, and an ice cream social on the Chatham County Campus. Diane and Abby would like to thank everyone for their participation in the fund raising events and for their generosity.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC

class="byline">by Theresa Cry, Director of Enrollment

We are sending our graduates out into a competitive job market. This year, CCCC is hosting a "Dress for Success" event for students. The goal is to provide all of our students with professional attire, including career wear, suits, and uniforms. Everyone reading this must have one appropriate outfit for either a male or a female that will provide them with the finishing touch to venture confidently into the job market. We are urging people to donate gently used business clothing so that this program will be successful. The drop-off date for clothing is Tuesday, April 13th from 4:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. We can arrange also for pick-up dates for Chatham and Harnett County donations.

"Dress for Success" will take place on Wednesday, April 14th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Civic Center. Students may come select free attire anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 2 p.m. and also participate in free workshops, such as interviewing skills and grooming and dressing for the workplace. Please make your students aware of this opportunity.

Lisa Barron Named to ADHA Committee

Lisa Barron

Lisa Barron, adjunct dental hygiene instructor at Central Carolina Community College, has been appointed to the American Dental Hygienists' Association's Committee on National Boards.

Barron, of Sanford, is a registered dental hygienist currently pursuing her Master of Dental Hygiene Education degree at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She will serve as the student representative on the board and also be a member of the Committee on Dental Hygiene of the American Dental Association's Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations.

"I hope to use my appointment to this committee to help advance the future of dental hygiene," Barron said. "Serving on this committee will enable me to have a voice in choosing qualified test constructors to improve the quality of the National Board of Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE), thus impacting our profession for years to come. I am also hoping that knowledge gained from this process will facilitate my ability to prepare our dental hygiene students for the rigors of the NBDHE."

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Russell Ingram

Russell Ingram
Youth Program Coordinator

The Division of Economic & Community Development brings together departments that provide a wide range of support and training services: Industry Services, Workforce Development, Adult Education, Continuing Education, Small Business Center, Emergency Services Training Center, Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, and Enrollment Management. Through these departments, the college has expanded its proactive role in helping people become trained workers who are able to find good jobs.

Russell Ingram came to CCCC last December to coordinate an important aspect of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program, taking care of the kids. Russell's focus is on individuals between the ages of 16 and 21 living in Lee or Chatham County who are having trouble in school, are at risk for dropping out, or who have already dropped out. His program also reaches out to youth who are homeless or in foster care and those who have never worked or who have been unemployed for a long time. These young people need a broad array of supportive services to become employable. They need everything-a GED, job training, financial assistance, and most importantly, tough love counseling to keep them on track. WIA provides federal funding for this program. Russell provides the determination, the focused planning, and the energy. "The needs are immense," Russell told us, "but we are determined to find our kids, get them in the programs they need, and keep them on track." He adds with a big smile, "I love this job."

Russell was born in Richmond County, NC and grew up in the state. He put in two years at Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC, but left to enlist in the army. After serving four years in the military, Russell came out of the service determined to finish his college education. Returning to Livingstone College, he graduated in 2008 with a major in sociology and a minor in criminal justice. After graduation, Russell spent some time in the corporate world, but eventually came home to North Carolina, where he worked for the Building Futures Youth Programs in Rockingham, a WIA-funded program. Last December he brought his experience, discipline, and energy to CCCC.

Russell loves all the many kinds of music found in North Carolina. He spends his weekends with his two children, a two-year-old and a five-year-old. He's presently looking for a place to settle in Sanford.
