Ten-year-old Ian Higgins (left) shares examples of his artwork with students in Central Carolina Community College's Early Childhood Education Creative Activities class Feb. 9 at the college's Lee County Campus. Higgins, a fourth grader at Mary Scroggs Elementary School, in Chapel Hill, is the grandson of class instructor David Leperi, of Pittsboro. The CCCC students are learning about the use of creative activities in educating young children. They were interested in getting a child's perspective on creative activities and ideas on what can be done from his work in clay modeling, watercolor, collage, and pastels. Pictured are ECE students Curtis Casey (behind Higgins), of Pittsboro; and (right, from front) Nicole Turner and Patricia Sellers, of Sanford, and Heather Fawcett, of Cameron. PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Abby Walker

Abby Walker
Administrative Assistant, CCCC Foundation

There is a culture of excellence underlying the quality of instruction at this college. The tangible evidence of this is the high number of graduates that pass the board, licensing, and certificate exams necessary to practice their chosen professions. A major contributor to this phenomenon is the CCCC Foundation, founded in 1988 with the stated mission of ensuring the continued quality and availability of instruction to our community.

We talked to Abby Walker about this recently. Abby, a Sanford native born and bred, has been working with the Foundation since 2003. She is particularly proud of the Foundation's support of the faculty in the form of tuition reimbursement, equipment purchases, and other assistance to improve instruction. "The funds we raise help to meet some of the financial needs of the college," Abby told us, "particularly in these challenging financial times."

The Foundation produces superb results with a tiny staff, consisting of Abby and the Foundation Director, Diane Glover. The community anticipates their two big events, the annual golf tournament and the yearly auction, and turns out faithfully to support them. Abby reminded us that they are preparing to launch both their community and campus fundraising efforts in early April. In her work with the Foundation, Abby carries on a family heritage. Her grandfather, James F. Bridges, and her uncle, Tommy Bridges, served as trustees of the college for 18 and 12 years, respectively. She told us with pride of the James F. and Dixie Bridges Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by Tommy Bridges and his wife, Gail, in honor of his parents.

"Abby lives in Sanford with her husband, Fedd, and their two daughters, Grace, 7, and Mollie, 4. Fedd is Waste Water Supervisor for the City of Sanford. She attended East Carolina University in Greenville and majored in business. Before joining the staff of the Foundation, Abby worked for Barton College in the Lifelong Education/Weekend College Program. Demanding jobs and school keep the Walker family busy, but when they have leisure time, they head for North Carolina's beautiful beaches.
