WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

Unsung Heroes

During the recent winter weather, the Maintenance Department worked literally around the clock to keep acres of parking lots, campus roadways, and walks free of snow and ice so we could get to work safely. We just want to express a heartfelt "thank you" for everything they do.

We couldn't get the Maintenance team together for a group photograph, but we list all their names here:

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC

Louise L. Tuller Trust

The Louise L. Tuller School of Nursing plaque

In recognition of the generosity of the Louise L. Tuller Trust, the college's Associate Degree Nursing program has been named the Louise L. Tuller School of Nursing. Louise Locke Lavender Tuller was a businesswoman and nurse in Bainbridge, N.Y., before retiring to Sanford. She died in Sanford in 1978, leaving a trust that has benefited nursing education at several institutions over the years, including CCCC. This is the first time the college has named a program in recognition of a financial contribution. The Louise L. Tuller School of Nursing plaque was unveiled Wednesday, February 10, at a joint CCCC Board of Trustees/CCCC Foundation event at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center with members of the trust board. Pictured (from left) are George Womble, CCCC Foundation president; Bobby Powell, CCCC Board of Trustees chairman; Rhonda Evans, CCCC Nursing & Allied Health Programs chair; CCCC President Bud Marchant; and, Harry Miller, Louise L. Tuller Trust chairman.

Low Cost Home Energy Audit Available to Lee County Residents

Qualified Lee County residents have a tremendous opportunity to save energy and money with a low-cost home energy audit being offered through Cooperative Extension's E-Conservation Program. The E-Conservation Program is an ongoing collaborative project between NC Cooperative Extension, NC State University, and the State Energy Office with the mission of helping homeowners reduce residential energy usage and the associated costs. Energy audits evaluate a home's air leaks, insulation needs, and the heating/air conditioning system.

A professional home energy audit rater will conduct a 2 to 4 hour inspection of your home, including a blower door test to check for house holes and energy leaks. At the conclusion of the home assessment, the homeowners will receive a written follow-up evaluation and recommendations on ways to improve the home's energy efficiency. Recommendations can include anything from adding insulation, caulking house holes, using a programmable thermostat, servicing the furnace, or changing personal energy use habits to reduce energy use and save money. The homeowner is encouraged to act on the recommendations made by the auditor. These audits are valued at $500, but will only cost homeowners $100 through this special program. There are a limited number of audits available, which will be scheduled during February and March. In 2009, ten residents participated in the program and all had high remarks for the audit process.

To qualify to receive a home energy assessment, your home must be no larger than 2,000 square feet, have only 1 heating/air conditioning system, and be 5 years old or older. To qualify, the homeowner must attend Cooperative Extension's energy conservation workshop, which is scheduled on February 18, 2010, at 4:00 pm and repeated again at 7:00 pm at the Farm Bureau Auditorium of the McSwain Center in Sanford.

If you are interested in taking advantage of this opportunity to save energy and money and participate in this statewide research project, contact the Cooperative Extension at (919) 775-5624. For additional information on this great opportunity, contact Laura Lauffer.

    PERSONNEL NOTES

    Cougar Profile

    Julie Niskanen

    Julie Niskanen
    Art Instructor, Lee County Campus

If you walked through the hallway in the CFC building on the Sanford campus last December, you probably stopped to look at the drawings exhibited there. It was an impressive display of work by Julie Niskanen's beginning drawing students.

Julie has been teaching drawing and art appreciation at CCCC since the fall of 2008 and, to judge by the results, she is an inspired teacher. Julie is a well-established artist. She lives in Raleigh with her husband, T.J., and maintains a studio there. Julie exhibits widely both in the United States and internationally with current and upcoming exhibits in Raleigh, High Point, Seattle, and Moscow.

Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Julie received her BFA from Iowa State University in 2005. After studying in Rome and extensive travel in Europe, she earned a MFA in printmaking from the University of South Dakota. Julie's serene and poetic art derives from the natural world around her. Below is her artistic statement:

"The natural forms that permeate our world too often become background patterns in our hectic lives. For the most part, people no longer feel the wonder of the complexities and intricacies seen in forms such as a single seedpod. All too often one walks by a scene or object without noticing it. What happens when we slow down to truly notice and examine what is around us? Examining these organic forms allows me to reflect on the human disregard for so many things, while also reflecting on and bringing forth these rhythms of nature that are often unnoticed in our lives. I focus on the beauty I find within these natural forms. I work to bring attention and give power to the subtle changes and cycles in nature, as meaning can be found in the smallest things."

You can learn more about Julie and see some of her work on her website, www.julieniskanen.com.
