Billy Freeman

Billy Freeman
Department Chair, Media Technologies

Are you tuned into CCCC? The college owns two FM stations, WDCC, 90.5 FM, located on the Sanford campus and WUAW, 88.3 FM, located at Triton High School in Erwin, NC. Both are student run and both broadcast an eclectic mix of popular music and local talk.

Radio broadcasting is just one part of the Media Technology program. Billy Freeman, the department chair, is responsible for radio, television, and library information technology, with "technology" being the key word. Students in these programs learn the pragmatic technical skills that lead to the behind-the-scenes jobs that keep the airwaves and cyberspace alive and information flowing.

Billy is Sanford born and bred. He grew up here and earned his A.A. in the University Transfer program at CCCC, going on to get his B.F.A. at UNC - Greensboro in technical theater. Billy started his broadcasting career here in Sanford as a part-time radio announcer on a local station and worked his way up to Program Director/Operations Manager. He also worked in radio in the Raleigh area before coming to CCCC where he spent three years in the radio and media department at the college in the early eighties. He left to take the job of technical director at the Temple Theater. Billy returned to CCCC in 1998 to head up the Media Technology department. He is presently the voice of the college phone system as well as the voiceover you hear in a number of the college videos and commercials. He lives in Sanford with his wife and son.

Billy tells us that keeping up with rapidly changing technology is the biggest challenge in his program. He believes that broadcasting has a vibrant future with a voracious and growing need for people who can provide relevant content and/or have the technical skills to keep the systems running. Students at the college earn an Associate degree by spending a year in TV broadcasting and a year in radio broadcasting. You can see samples of the TV student projects on the college's YouTube site, CCCConnected, which can be accessed from the home page of the website.

Billy thinks Sanford, NC and Central Carolina Community College occupy a very special place in the universe. "You can literally get anywhere from here," he says. "It's all up to you."
