CCCC Relay For Life Team Passes Goal

The CCCC Relay for Life Team composed of students, friends, faculty, and staff really outdid themselves this year (CCCC's fifth consecutive year participating after a hiatus a few years ago)! The team fund-raising goal was $2500, but the team banked instead $2700 for the American Cancer Society's annual event to raise money and awareness about cancer. Employees and champs at representing the college and living this year's Relay theme of "Show Your Hope" were Amanda Carter (co-captain), Renee Dusenberry, Zena Harvley-Felder, Celia Hurley, Brenda Keller, Mary Ellen O'Shields, Joni Pavlik, Emily Shepard, Bianka Stumpf (co-captain), Ty Stumpf, Martha Youngblood, and Janet Zurbach. Relay for Life 2010 will kick-off this fall. Hope to have even more CCCC folks on the team!

Cougar Profile

Zhyra Barber

Zhyra Barber
Small Business Center Administrative Specialist

We caught up with Zhyra Barber the day before the 2009 Small Business Expo and trailed her as she was setting up in the Main Exhibition Hall of the Civic Center for this popular annual event. It was a whirlwind demonstration of the pivotal role Zhyra plays in supporting the Small Business Center's broad range of services to entrepreneurs and to the local business community.

Zhyra emphasized that the SBC is a resource available to the general public, but also to the faculty and staff of CCCC. "We are here for everybody," she said, "all year around." In addition to free consulting services for start-ups and existing small businesses, the SBC's "Lunch and Learn" seminars will earn participants staff development credits. "We send out staff development opportunities through the Helpdesk announcements," Zhyra noted. She also added that you can check the SBC website, www.leesbc.com, for the Lunch and Learn schedule or contact her to get on the email list.

Born in The Philippines, Zhyra grew up in Johnsonville, NC. She attended Western Harnett High School and CCCC, where she earned an Associate Degree in OST/MOA. She met and married her husband, Jim, while he was stationed at Ft. Bragg. They reside in Sanford now with their two sons, Tyler, 6, and Colin, 5, and a daughter, Madison, 3. The "perfect" dog, Zoey, and two sugar gliders, Pierre and Penelope, complete the family.

After a short stint as a stay-at-home mom, Zhyra went to work for the CCCC Small Business Center in December of 2007 and finds her job challenging and fun. She supports Jim Felton, SBC Director, in planning and organizing Expos, real estate seminars, business counseling and continuing education activities. She also lends a hand to their "sister," the Civic Center.

Between a demanding job and a young family, one might think Zhyra had her hands full, but she has set a new goal for herself--becoming a Registered Nurse. She has returned to CCCC in the University Transfer program for her undergraduate requirements and intends to move on to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill to finish a four-year nursing program.

When we asked Zhyra what she does for fun, she laughed and said, "I'm always having fun." Her interests include the theater, sporting events, movies, concerts, the beach, camping, eating, reading and meeting new people.
