WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

CCCC & Lee County Schools Partner to Create E-Lee College Academy

signing an agreement

Dr. Bud Marchant, president of Central Carolina Community College, and Dr. Jeffrey Moss, Superintendent of Lee County Schools, have signed an agreement to create E-Lee College Academy. The academy concept is similar to one that Moss instituted between Beaufort County (N.C.) Schools and Beaufort County Community College while he served as superintendent there.

The Academy, a series of college courses taught via the Internet, offers college-bound high school students up to 45 semester credit hours. These General Education Core courses are part of the college's Associate in Arts degree program. The courses and credits will transfer, intact, to colleges and universities in the University of North Carolina System. The students will also receive high school credit for them toward their diploma. The N.C. Department of Public Instruction's Learn and Earn Initiative will pay all tuition and textbook costs.

"This is part of our on-going cooperation with the school district to enable students to achieve college credit," said Dr. Marchant. "It's another example of the innovative programs that hold great promise for the students of Lee County." Artical End

Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE)

by Dr. T. Eston (Bud) Marchant, President

Dear Faculty,

As you know, Central Carolina Community College is participating in the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). In conjunction with the CCSSE administration this spring, we also have the opportunity to conduct the Community College Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (CCFSSE). The CCFSSE instrument was designed to mirror the Community College Student Report in an effort to facilitate discussions about student and faculty responses.

We plan to use the CCSSE results to promote institutional improvement, and it is vital that our faculty have a voice in these efforts. We feel that being able to view faculty expectations and perceptions of student engagement (in the aggregate) alongside 2009 student responses will not only help us identify areas of strength, but will also enable us to recognize challenges or gaps that may require further consideration.

I am requesting that faculty members participate in the faculty survey. CCSSE will send you an email with a link to the survey, which you will then complete online. The window of time for completing the survey is from March 23 to April 30th.

Upon completion of the online administration period, CCSSE staff will analyze the results, and we will receive an electronic report of results when we receive our CCSSE Institutional Report in July.

Your survey responses will not be linked back to you as an individual faculty member. Instead, all student responses will be linked to all faculty responses for institution-wide improvement purposes, so please be completely candid in your responses.

I appreciate your cooperation and participation in this exciting initiative. If you have questions, please contact: Zena Harvley-Felder, zharvleyfelder@cccc.edu, 919.718.7253. Artical End

PERSONNEL NOTES

Cougar Profile

Jennifer Owens

Jennifer Owens
Distance Education, Lee County Campus

Jennifer Owens, a Cameron resident, was born and raised in a small rural town in western North Carolina, Spruce Pine. She headed to CCCC in January 2007 to enroll as a special credit student to take required courses upon degree completion. While attending CCCC, she met her husband, Thomas. Jennifer later received her Associate of Applied Science degree in Computer Information Technology from Maryland Community College in May 2008.

Jennifer wears many hats at CCCC, but all are important to the college, faculty, and students. She works with Blackboard course management, troubleshoots, coordinates offsite-proctored exams, podcasts, and does distance education faculty training. Before coming to CCCC, Jennifer participated in the Workstudy program. She also tutored in computer science.

The atmosphere, students, faculty, and staff are just a few reasons that attracted Jennifer to CCCC.

"Everyday is different," she said. " I get to meet and work with many wonderful people including students and faculty. I also get to be one of the first people to see and learn new teaching technologies."

Outside of work, Jennifer enjoys going on road trips and concerts with her husband and friends. Jennifer also has two cats, even though her husband is allergic to them. One is a kitten named Cake and the other is an adult named Kitty Kilala.

"I have a huge soft spot for cats," she said. Artical End
